In fact, going back and playing this again, seeing all these words coming up again had extra meaning the second time around, so they're all on purpose. Key words and bits of sentences that come up on screen during dialogue reinforce the important bits of conversation and makes the dialogue scenes more engaging too. Blurring visuals and static distortion are a unique choice, and while a bit overdone, they do help to emphasise the messy mind-state Max is in. The excellent motion capture is somewhere between La Noire and Red Dead Redemption. Yeah, and they so use many fascinating mechanics to tell the story too. The most incredible thing is that within 10 minutes, you know everything you need to know about him, you know what he's been through, where he's at in his life and where he wants to be going, which is pretty much no where. He's so down on himself that you feel for the guy and instantly connect to him. And I just love Max, how could you not? In the other games he was just a cardboard cutout, but here he's a fully fleshed out character, complete with flaws. The fact that the narration would react to what you're doing or what you're not doing, just makes you more connected to the character, I think. If I lingered for too long in one area, or wasn't sure where to go, after a while Max would let me know, which I thought was really clever. It's also remarkable storytelling, max's down trodden voice over narrates almost every thing you do, at times even reminding me of Bastion's reactive narration. It's refreshing to have a Brazillian setting, and you can tell the developer has worked hard to capture the feel of its slums and culture. The story takes many turns, and beautifully flashbacks to key events in Max's life that put him in the position he is now. He then sets out to make amends, and figure out exactly what happened. Naturally, all hell breaks loose and Max's alcoholism plays a part in the mistakes that he makes. Military groups and corrupt police don't help the situation and Violence and kidnapping is commonplace. The country is torn in poverty and civil unrest. He doesn't care about much anymore and he hasn't got much to care about anyway.īut Max also has a reputation for getting the job done, and this leads him to Brazil where he's put in charge of security for a wealthy family. A hopeless drunk, haunted by murderous memories.
Max is back, and he's fallen off the wagon. A warning that this game is very violent, and some scenes may disurb some viewers. Max Payne 3 shows what Rockstar Games can do when they don't need to render an entire open world, and it sets a high bar for the genre, in everything it does, and it's one of the most impressive shooters we have ever played.
